On a Quest For Love is a tribute to the Roots drummer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, and an examination of the digitization of love. Many of us have found that we’re on a constant quest for love; whether it be for friendships, romance, family, or the love of self. With almost all of the modern world being digitized nothing seems real anymore. Recent studies have linked social media use to depression, low self-esteem, and bitter jealousy.

My intentions with this piece was to create a three-dimensional experience while simultaneously mimicking the artificial intelligence of Facebook Live. The textured area of Questlove’s hair represents the multitude of crumbled relationships we must sometimes endure during our journey. The transformation of the Afro into a skyline is symbolic of those of us who’ve searched the world for that true love.

Is it possible for us to enjoy the power of social media sites to connect us? Perhaps, but the problem arises when we find ourselves subtly substituting electronic relationships for physical ones or mistaking our electronic relationships for physical ones.
